I am not a “success story.” Nor am I a victim.

I am writing about real world issues that effect me and other transgender people: poverty, mental illness, discrimination, and more. Because I am self-published, I am uncensored. I write my truth, and it speaks to many people, transgender and not. The work I do is important, because I am aim to be empowering but not at the expense of integrity. My fiction and memoir work are highly personal and often irreverent. They straddle the line between “high and low” culture, as they are notable literary achievements, but also accessible, straightforward, and entertaining. My books are praised again and again for their compassion, humor, and refreshing honesty.

Your monthly pledge will help me keep working on new material.
I want to keep writing for the rest of my life. I’d like to write 10, even 20 more books while I’m on this planet. And between publications, I have a blog, my art, my music, and other outlets through which I tell stories. I’m always working on several, self-motivated projects.

Who I am

I have 3 previous books, Refuse, I Know Very Well How I Got My Name, and Show Trans. Refuse and I Know… are fiction about Dean, a female-to-male transgender person, and his struggles as a young adult. They draw heavily on my own life experiences. My third book, Show Trans, is a memoir chronicling some of the most difficult years of my life. In 2011, Refuse was a finalist in the Rainbow Book Awards in several categories . In 2013, I Know Very Well How I Got My Name was the winner for Best Transgender Fiction. I have also written for Original Plumbing, The New York Times, Trans-Genre.net, and other publications. I had a short story in The Collection, a transgender anthology which won the 2012 Lambda Literary Award. Show Trans was named one of the best books of the year it’s category by The Advocate and praised by critics and readers alike.

My work has received favorable reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Out in Print Queer Book Reviews, Lambda Literary, and Publishers’ Weekly, to name a few. Mark Simpson, a British journalist for The Guardian and the author of Saint Morrissey, called my first novel “irresistible.” Kirkus Reviews referred to my work as “well written, nuanced…pioneering examples of transgender fiction.” My writing has been read by gender studies and literature classes at New York University, Trent University, The New School, SUNY Fredonia, Onondaga Community College, and more. I also travel as much as possible to give readings at book fairs, events, book stores, open mics, and more. Despite this, my work remains largely unknown to the general public as well as within the transgender community. This is because I have extremely limited promotional power. I work almost entirely on my own with no budget.

The Impact

1. There aren’t a lot of trans authors who have published novels. It’s important we are represented at larger LGBTQ literary events. In addition, most books with transgender characters are not written by transgender authors. Mine are among the few exceptions.
2. Few successful queer writers live outside expensive major metropolitan centers like NYC, San Francisco, LA. Millions of queer people live elsewhere but don’t see their lives reflected in queer culture. I am from Syracuse, NY and write from this perspective. It makes for fresh writing. I think that my less than glamorous lifestyle resonates with many people.
3. I receive an estimate of 2 or 3 emails/messages a month from transgender people telling me how important my books were to them. A lot of these people have told me they never read anything else like my books and that it helped them accept themselves. Some of these people have been as young as 13.
4. I find it inspiring to believe that independent artists can succeed despite the climate of the publishing world. I don’t have any of the traditional assistance or funding that many authors possess. It’s just me on my laptop. And yet the internet has enabled me to reach thousands of readers in the past 4 years. Please help me continue on this journey, and I will continue to write as best and as truthfully as I am able.
